Memorial edition, published after Burton\'s death, and edited by his wife; Isabel Burton.

In the original cloth but could do with a rebind.

Featuring two coloured plates, a map, and three illustrations throughout the text to volume one. As well as two coloured plates, a map, and four illustrations throughout the text to volume two.

Burton was a British geographer, explorer, translator, writer, soldier, orientalist, cartographer, ethnologist, spy, linguist, poet, fencer and diplomat. He was known for his travels and explorations within Asia, Africa and the Americas, as well as his extraordinary knowledge of languages and cultures. According to one count, he spoke 29 European, Asian and African languages.

Complete in two volumes.

CONDITION

In original cloth bindings with gilt motifs to the front boards. Externally, lightly rubbed, but with wear and loss to the spines. Backstrip is lifting to volume two. All joints are slightly strained, with hinges to volume one also slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound and bright, with instances of spotting to the first and last pages. Private library bookplates to the front pastedowns of both volumes, and blind stamps to front free endpapers. Copperplate ink signatures to half titles. Overall: GOOD.
