This antique bookis over 142 years old!
This antique tome is in GOOD condition overall for its age! I believe that this is the first edition, which is quite scarce and of better quality when compared to the 1900 publication. Nicely preserved overall. Ex-library volume with writing to front board and spine; rebacked by the library. Boards show wear and soiling as pictured. Library stamp to bottom edge though very faded. Gilt dragon illustration to front board shows rubbing but presents nicely!
Internally, this tome boasts a nice tight binding thanks to the library reback, though there isnoticeablecracking to the hinges; boards remainfirmlyattached, and all page groupings are secure! Xavier University Library (New Orleans) bookplate to front pastedownendpaper; interesting Japanese or Chinese stamp to the back of the title page, as well as Library of Congress stamp; library markings to back pastedown endpaper, as well as old bookstore stamp.
The text block itself is in GOOD condition overall! Pages show light toning from age, but are otherwise generally clean, with just light scattered foxing. Corners show creasing throughout. Some small edge tears. Some underlining in red ink on the last two pages. One uncut page. Nicely preserved otherwise.
Includes 21 plates illustrated from photos, and six maps, including three fold out maps, with two printed in color. Maps show wear as pictured, with one being detached from the binding. Scarce to find in any condition!
