18C/19C FRENCH EUROPEAN CARVED OPENWORK COQUILLA NUT SNUFF BOX NAPOLEON CREST:

For your consideration we have here a superbly carved late 18c to early 19c European French pierced openwork style lidded snuff box out of coquilla nut material with one side having a Napoleonic crest. This fabulous snuff box was produced around the turn of the 19c or c1780 to c1820 and was most likely made for the French market but it easily could have also been made as a tourist item although this was brought to the USA and was donated to a small southern museum where it was sold with several others to raise money for newacquisitions and this is the last remaining one. The workmanship on this snuff box is of the highest possible quality having great attention paid to even the smallest details in which I tried to show the box from all angles as there is no area left unadorned. One side depicts a pair of cherubs amoungst trees with a largecornucopia of sorts complete with pineapples and other fruits and flowers while the opposite side shows a man and woman dressed in the period under what appears to be palms with a Napoleonic crest in which they each have a hand on. the front and back sides as well as each end are finely carved with a variety of flowers, leaves, fruits and nuts all on a ground of finely incised lines in diagonals and cross hatching. The outside surfaces have the most wonderful and thick aged patina giving it a glow that only comes from many years of handling.The lid is hinged and opens and closes with ease with the interior nicely hollowed for Tobacco, snuff or whatever the person wanted to store safely. Condition is excellent and is one of the better ones I have seen with actually little wear with the most pleasing honey brown color with only tiny little nips off some edges and a couple of tight age lines and a small amount of shrinkage in the joints is all to really report with the inside of the lid having a inset cap due to the way these lids were made and had to be hollowed out for the openwork carving that is why they finished with inserting these caps. Sizes: Length 3-7/8\" x Depth 2\" x Height 1-3/8\". A nice large coquilla snuff box in fabulous surviving condition and would be a must for any snuff box or antique box collector and the winner will not be disappointed.
