Description:

FRESH FROM AN OLD PENNSYLVANIA COLLECTION, THIS IS A FANTASTIC EXAMPLE OF AN EXTREMELY RARE FORM OF WINDSOR FORM THE LATE 18TH CENTURY. MADE IN THE SCHOOL OF THE PREEMINENT CONNECTICUT WINDSOR CRAFTSMAN OF THE 18TH CENTURY, THIS GREAT EXAMPLE IS ALSO A LEATHER SEATED CHAIR, ONE OF THE RAREST FORMS MADE.

A FANTASTIC EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THE RAREST FORMS OF WINDSOR CHAIRS.

A WONDERFUL 18TH CENTURY CONNECTICUT WINDSOR CONTINUOUS ARM ARMCHAIR WITH 14 TURNED BULBOUS SPINDLES AND TWO FINELY TURNED SUPPORTS. IT HAS A HAND HEWN CHESTNUT SEAT, THE BEST PORRINGER SHAPED HANDS ENDING WITH THE CLASSIC TRACY SCHOOL \"BAMBOO\" TURNED LEGS AND STRETCHERS.

IN A WONDERFUL OLD GRUNGY 19TH CENTURY DARK GREEN-BLACK STAINED SURFACE WITH GREAT PATINA, THERE IS TRACES OF THE ORIGINAL RED PAINT.

Eastern Connecticut, Circa 1780-1790, in Maple, Ash, Hickory and Chestnut.

This great chair is a great example of an Eastern Connecticut Windsor from the latter part of the 18th century. The uniquely turned legs are the very best. The BOLDLY AND THICK CUT shaped saddle seat and side stretchers and shaped center stretcher are classic Tracy School. The carved and stem bent crest is of hickory and the highly Bulbous turned spindles are unique to the Tracy School.

THIS CHAIR, LIKE THE IDENTICAL EXAMPLE IN SANTORE\'S BOOK IS A VERY RARE LEATHER SEAT EXAMPLE. VERY FEW TRACY WINDSOR CHAIRS WERE UPHOLSTERED. Although the leather upholstery on this chair is replaced, it follows the original in technique and even copies the brass tack configuration that Tracy used.

It has great porringer shaped hands.

FROM THE TRACY SCHOOL, he is perhaps the best known Connecticut Windsor chair-maker\'s of the 18th Century. His examples are considered the pinnacle of Windsor chair making.

The Eastern Connecticut-Rhode Island border region was the home of a number of Windsor chair makers during and after the American Revolution.
A whole school of chair making evolved under one family led by Ebenezer Tracy. The captain, who lived and worked in Lisbon, created a unique and beautiful style, one marked by bold turnings, widely splayed legs and painstakingly carved seats. The captain, his three sons, two sons-in-law, and various apprentices created thousands of highly distinctive chairs in various forms - writing arm, fan back, bow back, continuous arm and settee, among others. Today, surviving Tracy chairs are highly prized by collectors. For a similar example see, \"The Windsor Style in America\", by Charles Santore. Also, see the front picture of Santore\'s book for the exact turnings on the legs and saddle seat.

THIS IS AN EXTREMELY RARE CHAIR IN FANTASTIC CONDITION AND GREAT OLD GRUNGY COLOR.

The condition is as follows:

All the components are original. The feet and legs and all the spindles are intact. The seat does not have any splits or cracks.

There is also one very minor break to one of the spindles on the left side about half way up, (see photos). It is very stable and intact.
The present burgundy leather upholstery is from the late 19th or very early 20th century. It was professionally done and the tacking and brass work follow the original design of the documented Tracy examples.

Because of the extreme delicacy of this type of chair very few have survived.
There are no additions or restorations other than these I have listed.

For a similar example see, \"The Windsor Style in America\", by Charles Santore.
