Louis XV, the featured item is Rococo in style, with sinuous lines and carved garland and floral motifs. The exquisite carved motifs are quite pronounced, protruding approx 1\" from the surface of the frame. Incorporated into this is the painting on canvas within the frame above the mirror; a scene of romantic figurals in a pastoral setting. Original paint in what appears to be two coats, a French olive green color over an even earlier coat of French blue color. This particular trumeau is an amazing example, in fine condition with great integrity to the frame. No flaking that I can detect is evident on the canvas. Some background info: French furniture made during the 18th Century has long been praised as the epitome of elegance and fine craftsmanship. A center piece of the 18th Century was the \"trumeau\"~ a large mirror set within a decorative panel often above a mantel. Sometimes called overmantel mirrors, most trumeaux were built into a room\'s boiserie, or carved woodwork paneling. They were a most common decorative element found in the bourgeois houses and chateaux in the Provence region of southern France.
