For your offerding considerationare two very nice18th century kaolin clay pipes found on an American Revolutionary war site in the Champlain River valley of upstate NY near Plattsburg. They arein very good condition with the long stem pipe showing charring from extensive smoking use. The reed stemmed pipe bowl is one of the earliest of this type and a perfect example. It is intact and has a very small hairline in the bottom which is not visible untilheld and closely viewed and is very stable with no problem. This reed stem form was first manufactured during the revolution and was made of white Kaolin clay into the early 1800\'s. It\'s popularity grew about the middle of the 19th century where it evolved into being manufactured from red clay. Not many of this type are available and are seldom seen for sale opposed to the later red clay pipe bowls which are generally readily available. A large variety of examples can be found in George Neumann & FrankKravic\'s book, \"Collector\'s Illustrated Encyclopedia ofthe American Revolution\" as well as about any other book in regardsto early colonial life.
