18th century Wedgwood Jasperware covered sugar bowl. Damaged & repaired. Lovely:
$323.12

Without professional appraisal or in-depth investigation this piece of Wedgwood jasperware appears to be from the late 18th century. Given that there\'s 200+ years of history behind this sugar bowl, it is in pretty good shape! It is a covered sugar bowl and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston has a very similar piece in their collection.I havea listing for a Wedgwood helmet jug that looks to be the mate for this sugar bowl, due to their age as well as the matching reliefs and striped sections.
The damage to the sugar bowl is limited to the cover. It was broken into four clear pieces at some point in its history and put back together. A 1 and 1/2\" half moon shaped piece of the inner lip on the underside was lost as well as one of the very tiny orbs that surround the knob on the top of the lid. There is paint or a varnish covering most of five of the leaves that circle the knob, and a swatch on another one. The same off-colour paint can be found on five on the white stripes and a blue paint can be found on six of the blue stripes. There are small chips out of the blue that can be found on two of the break lines. There are three hairline fractures thatare visible on close inspection. There are small cracks found the foliage relief around the edge of the lid, as well as small swatches of the cream and blue paints where two of the cracks come to the edge. The underside of the lid is mostly covered in the cream paint, this makes it hard to describe the damage beyond the four obvious pieces it was broken into. There is a 1 and 1/2\" half moon shaped piece missing from the inner lip, I would think this and the missing little orb were lost when the lid was original broken. Uponvery closescrutinizing I\'ve found the bowl to be in lovely condition, with only and hairline crack through the wrist of the figure seated on the ground with a child and rub marks around the edge of the underside to mention. A professional restoration and clean may do wonderful things for this little piece of history!
Though my other Wedgwood pieces currently up for sale are lovely, there is a different feel to this one. The jasperware feels almost velvety and of a different softer quality. The design is outstanding and charming. Between the adorable silhouette, the striped peaked lid and the sweet mother and children relief, it is a fine example of the artist creating beauty in ausable object. With the lid on the total height of the sugar bowl is 4 and 3/8\" The lid by itself measures approximately 2\" high when sitting on a table top. The outercircumference of the lid is 11 and 1/4\" and it\'s diameter is 3 and 1/2\". The circumference of the inner lip is 9 and 3/8\" and the diameter is 2 and 3/4\". The circumference of theupper edge of the bowl is 10 and 1/8\" and thediameter is 3 and 1/4\". The circumference of the bottom of the bowl is 6 and 6/8\" with a diameter of just over 2\". 2\" downfrom the top of the bowl it tapers in to a narrower base. On it\'s own the bowl is approximately 2 and 1/2\" tall. The figures in the classical relief are two seated women one with one child holding scissors in her lap and the other woman seated in a chair reading and at her feet is a small child playing with a doll. There is a tree,a potted plant, a sheep, a dragonfly, a few small plants, a harp or lyre and a butterfly setting the natural scene. There\'s incredibly fine detail in the relief - curls in thechildren\'shair, individual fingers, the veins in the insect wings, the strings on the lyre, a cloven hoof of the sheep. Beneath the figures is the wonderful striped portion in alternating cream and blue, the blue stripes are slightly raised above the white stripes.
The lid also has these playful and pretty alternating stripes with the blues raised above the white. The lid is encircled with a leafy relief around it\'s outer edge. The lid is topped with a little knob accented by a raised band of white to lift it off the bowl. Where the knob meets the peak of the lid it is surrounded by nine tiny orbs (would have been ten) and ten petals each about 3/4\" long. When viewed from above, the lid looks like a daisy in full radiant bloom! It\'s a lovely effect :)
Turning the bowl upside down reveals the three marks. \"WEDGWOOD\" is impressed in a very small even serif font. Off centre there is a \"3\" to one side and an \"S\" to the other.

***A note on the history of the Wedgwood pieces!***

These are an inherited collection from a family member. Her husband had bought pieces for her through the 50s, 60s and 70s that he found in small estate sales and second hand stores in Wales and England. A few pieces were purchased new for this lady by a few other family members. The Wedgwood belonged to my family member until she passed and was then stored until I found it again a couple of years ago. There are no certificates of authenticity and these have not been appraised by experts. I am documenting them with a critical unbiased eye as it\'s in my interest to move these pieces along to new homes and collections. All Wedgwood sales I am listing are being sold AS-IS and any flaws or damages are well documented, shipping materials and methods will be well documented.
