18th or 17th Century Double Sided Carved Butter Mold:
$90.00

This is a phenomenally interesting butter mold, carved on both sides. One side has a male figure and the other side has a female figure. The wood is very old with numerous worm holes. Also there is one knot in the wood which may indicate that it is pine. The costumes on both the man and the woman look like Pennsylvania Dutch of the 18th century or it might be earlier. It is carved on the side with what appear to be Roman numerals. Each side has this. I\'m not sure what it means or if it is an indication of when it was carved who are the initials of the carver. This was a functional item carved on both sides in order to save wood so that they would not be extravagant and waste the wood. That is also an indication of an earlier time, long gone. There is a hole at the top, where it was probably nailed to the wall. The condition is good, consistent with its age. The mold is 14 and one half inches long by five and one-half inches wide and 1 inch thick. This is a great primitive, one with wonderful patina on the wood. The starting price is $90.00 with .
