Description

What is a keris?
A keris is a Indonesian ceremonial dagger which normally has a wavy blade. Made from a mix of iron, nickel and steel, keris are thought to date back to the 10th-century kingdom of Airlangga, according to I Nyoman Weda Kusuma, a professor at the Faculty of Literature at Udayana University in Denpasar. It is at this time that the title ‘Mpu Keris’ (keris experts) starts to appear in Javanese literature.

Shrouded in myth and legend, over the centuries these daggers have become associated with magic and the super natural, and, to this day, many keris are believed to possess other worldly powers. Some people view the physical structure of the dagger as a representation of the human body, with the handle as our skull, the hilt as our collar bone, the t-section as the shoulder blades, and the 11 waves in the blade as our chest bones. The number of waves, however, may vary from keris to keris.

Keris vary in shape and form depending on both what region of Indonesia they are from and who the maker is. Religious convictions have also affected keris forms over the centuries, with the handle of an Islamic keris taking a more crescent shape and a Christian one resembling a crucifix. To add to the prestige of a keris, the handle may be elaborately carved and inlaid with a variety of precious stones.

The manufacturing of keris is complicated, hereby an interesting video of the process:
