HISTORY: Grand Army of the Republic: The GrandArmy of the Republic was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of theUnion Army, Union Navy, Marines and the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service who servedin the American Civil War for the Northern/Federal forces. Founded in 1866 inDecatur, Illinois, and growing to include hundreds of posts (local communityunits) across the nation (predominately in the North, but also a few in theSouth and West), it was dissolved in 1956 at the death of its last member,Albert Woolson (1850–1956) of Duluth, Minnesota. Linking men through theirexperience of the war, the G.A.R. became among the first organized advocacygroups in American politics, supporting voting rights for black veterans, promotingpatriotic education, helping to make Memorial Day a national holiday, lobbyingthe United States Congress to establish regular veterans\' pensions, andsupporting Republican political candidates. Its peak membership, at more than490,000, was in 1890, a high point of various Civil War commemorative andmonument dedication ceremonies. It was succeeded by the Sons of Union Veteransof the Civil War (SUVCW), composed of male descendants of Union Army and UnionNavy veterans. It held an annual \"National Encampment\" everyyear from 1866 to 1949.

Pacific Grove: Pacific Grove was founded in 1875 whenPacific Land Improvement Company, owned by David Jacks, donated acreage towardsthe first West Coast Chautauqua retreat formed by a group of Methodists who modeledthe town after Ocean Grove, New Jersey. In time, the butterflies, fragrantpines and fresh sea air brought others to the Pacific Grove Retreat to rest andmeditate. The initial camp meeting of the Pacific Coast branch of theChautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle was held in Pacific Grove in June1879. Modeled after the Methodist Sunday school teachers\' training campestablished in 1874 at Chautauqua Lake, New York, this location became part ofa nationwide educational network.

In November 1879, after the summer campers returned home,Robert Louis Stevenson wandered into the deserted campgrounds: \"I havenever been in any place so dreamlike. Indeed, it was not so much like adeserted town as like a scene upon the stage by daylight, and with no one onthe boards.\"

The Pacific Grove post office opened in 1886, closed laterthat year, and was re-opened in 1887. Pacific Grove incorporated in 1889.

Pacific Grove, like Carmel-by-the-Sea and Monterey, becamean artists\' haven in the 1890s and subsequent period. Artists of the En pleinair school in both Europe and the United States were seeking an outdoor venuewhich had natural beauty, so that Pacific Grove was a magnet for this movement.William Adam was an English painter who first moved to Monterey and thendecided on Pacific Grove for his home in 1906. At about the same time EugenNeuhaus, a German painter, arrived in Pacific Grove with his new bride. CharlesB. Judson was an artist of aristocratic lineage who painted in Pacific Groveover a long period of time beginning in 1907; Judson\'s murals decorate thehalls of the California Academy of Sciences.
