1902 Coronation Medal London Borough HammersmithTasteful and impressively heavy 32mm bronze medal by unknown maker issued for the Metropolitan Borough of Hammersmith (London).

Pierced by maker but in very fine condition. Interestingly, the date of the coronation is 9th August 1902 on this medal, which is correct. However, you will find examples of this and other Edward VII coronation medals and memorabilia with June 26th 1902 as the coronation date, which was the original scheduled date. But 2 days before, on June 24th, the King developed acute appendicitis, in those days a very serious condition with a high mortality rate. Luckily, being the King, he had access to the best cutting-edge medical treatment of the day and his surgeon, Sir Frederick Treves, performed one of the first keyhole operations on the King to treat the emergency. By all accounts it was a great success with the King able to sit up in bed the next day and smoke a cigar!It\'ll be a low start, sale as usual.
