An English translation of the famous Italian work, illustrated by Louis Chalon.

The title is a combination of the Greek words \'deka\', meaning ten, and \'hemera\', meaning day. It would thus roughly translate as \'ten day event\'. The work is structured as frame story, which contains over 100 individual stories told by seven young women and three young men hiding from the black death in a villa outside of Florence.

These stories span the whole gamut of human experience, from the erotic to the tragic. They generally extol the so-called mercantile virtues of intelligence and quick wit. The work was enormously influential, and was used as a source of allusion or inspiration by writers from Chaucer to Edgar Allen Poe.

This editionis illustrated bythe famous Louis Chalon. The illustrationsare frequently erotic in nature, as befits many of the stories.

Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist.

CONDITION

In the original cloth with gilt titles to the spines. Externally very smart with a little bumping to the extremities, and some light marking to the boards. The text block is untrimmed and a little dusty and spotted as a result. Internally, the first and last few pages are a little spotted as usual. Otherwise clean and bright throughout, and firmly bound. Overall: NEAR FINE
