This study discusses the catastrophic eruption of Pelee on the island of Martinique,in 1902. The eruption completely destroyed the town of St.Pierre, killing 30,000 people. Heilprin discusses the history of the tower, his visits there as well as the aftermath of the eruption and the science behind the eruption.

Written by Americangeologist, paleontologist and explorer, Angelo Heilprin. Heilprin spent most of his life on his travels, researching which he alternated withteaching and writing. Upon the eruption of Pelee in 1902,Heilprin was one of the first Scientists to arrive on site. His photographs andeyewitness account of the phenomena and theirconsequences are unique. He was the first geologist to ascend a side of a crater and revisited the site in 1903.

CONDITION

In original half cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, smart with rubbing to the head and tail of spine and to extremities. Handling marks to boards, particularly to the title label. Paper spine label is rubbed and lacking a small portion. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are very bright and clean. Page with photographs of Saint Pierre prior to and after the volcanic eruption, and a map of Martinique loosely inserted. Overall: VERY GOOD.
