The circumstance which led Charles Barber to create his alternative Double Eagle is not exactly known. It was certainly relatd to President Theodore Roosevelt\'s project with his friend Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign American coinage. As chief Engraver, any such commission should have been given to Barber and he thoroughly resented Saint-Gaudens\' involvement.Barbers decision to create his own design was probably made when Roosevelt insisted that Saint-Gaudens go back to the drawing board in the fall of 1906. Saint-Gaudens had a history of creating artistic designs that could not be easily struck and Barber did not want to miss his opportunity if Saint-Gaudens failed to produce a suitable piece. In the meantime, Saint-Gaudens supplied his Standing Eagle design that was ultimately used on the Ten-Dollar Eagle as a trial design to pair with his Lady Liberty obverse to determine if this could be struck successfully. Barber declared that this trial was useless since obverse and reverse dies need to be paired to determine if together they will allow the required metal flow to create a good piece. The issue became moot when Saint-Gaudens sent the obverse and reverse models of what would become his ultra high relief Double Eagle to President Roosevelt just before Christmas of 1906. The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was born and Charles Barber\'s alternative design faded into numismatic history. But Barber had considerable pride in his creation and did not destroy-as he should have done--the single example which now resides in the Smithsonian Institution.Charles E. Barber was the sixth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1879 until his death in 1917. Hesucceededhis father, William Barber, in the position and was succeeded as Chief Engraver by George T. Morgan. Most collectors know Charles Barber by the series of circulating coins which came to bear his name, the \"Barber\" silver half, quarter, and ten-cent piece bearing the laureate-crowned profile bust of Liberty. The image of Liberty on the obverse of this pattern Double Eagle clearly comes from the same hand that designed those coins. the reverse design was taken from a half dollar pattern done by Barber in 1891.This rare pattern has only 999 minted in 2009. It is one ounce of pure .999 gold. Coin is authenticated by NGC. Very neat, rare, and highly sought after collectible pattern piece that could have changed U.S. coinage history forever!

In 2009 the coin was privately issued as an Ultra Cameo proof restrike. The obverse shows a head of Liberty in profile facing left wearing a Phrygian cap inscribed LIBERTY and a laurel wreath. Seven stars are to the left and six are to the right with the date below. The reverse uses his pattern half dollar obverse J-1766, which shows Liberty standing, her right hand holding a sword and her left a pole on top of which is another Phrygian cap. Rays are behind Liberty, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is within them. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above, and the denomination DOUBLE EAGLE is on either side of the statue. The date 20 09 is in the exergue.
