Sally Louisa Tompkins (November9, 1833 – July 26, 1916) was a humanitarian, nurse, and philanthropist. Manybelieve that she was also the only woman officially commissioned in theConfederate Army. She is best-remembered for privately sponsoring a hospital inRichmond, Virginia to treat soldiers wounded in the American Civil War. Underher supervision she had the lowest death rate of any hospital Union orConfederate, during the Civil War.Whatever her devotion and work she has beenremembered as the \"Angel of the Confederacy\".
