William Howard Taft and James S. Sherman won over the third and last try for William Jennings Brian and John W. Kern.

Taft was a politically active Republican \"Judge\" from Ohio when President William McKinley plucked him out of relative obscurity to become the first civilian \"Governor\" of the newly acquired Philippine Islands. In January of 1900 he sailed for the Islands and organized the new government.

Taft returned in December of 1903 to become \"Secretary of War\" under the new President, Theodore Roosevelt. By the end of Roosevelt\'s time in 1908, Taft had become Roosevelt\'s \"hand picked\" successor and he was elected President. more below..

In the 1908 election, William Jennings Bryan ran for the third time. He had lost to William McKinley in 1896 and 1900. He did not run against Theodore Roosevelt in 1904, but came back to lose once again to his successor.

By the time the 1912 election rolled around Taft and Roosevelt had \"fallen out\" and Roosevelt tried, and failed, to take the Republican nomination away from him. Roosevelt never gave up in his life. He \"bolted\" the Republicans and formed the famous \"Bull Moose Party\" to run against Taft. Predictably, this split the Republican vote and Woodrow Wilson was elected.

In 1921 President Warren G. Harding appointed Taft to be \"Chief Justice of the Supreme Court\", a position Taft had wanted since his youth. He remains the only person ever to have been both President and Chief Justice. He served on the court until shortly before his death in 1930.

The Fob: A veteran, someone actually used it for a while. It was probably cleaned back then but not in a long long time. A neat collectible with lots of history attached. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
