A bound copy of 4 early editions of \"Bibby\'s Quarterly\" forming \"Bibby\'s Annual\", a large and impressive set of magazines that cover a range of subjects, notably Art, Nature Religion, and Science. Profusely illustrated throughout, many in colour, the articles very much reflecting the thinking of the times. But it is the cover artwork that is particularly impressive.
The front cover depicts an Astronomer looking at the Heavens, the spine decorated with the heads of famous scientists and people from the Arts - Plato, Galileo, Beethoven etc. However it is the 4 chromolithograph covers inside, one for each of the magazines, that really do impress, particularly as these were issued during the First World War. Plenty of moralising, and thoughts concerning the War - please study the photos.
I don\'t think any more editions of this \"Quarterly\" were issued during these years. The first three are through-paginated, 1 - 192; 1917 is paginated 1 - 64.
Joseph Bibby made his fortune selling food products, notably animal feed. It appears that these magazines, which do not plug these products, reflect the desire for \"improvement\" that was to be found at that time, not least in Liverpool.
I am selling two more such annuals, the Issues of which all have their covers. These are surely important examples of the Art movements and thinking of the time, in a mass marketing form.
Size: 40cms x 29cms. A heavy item.Condition:Covers a little marked and bumped, with a little wear to the spine. Front endpaper creased, but the text inside is in a good condition apart from page 114 in the 1915 edition, where a plate has been cut out - the print is still present but loose (see last photo).
