1914 OPENING OF THE PANAMA CANAL FIGURAL TERRACOTTA SCULPTURE KISS OF TWO OCEANS
This listing is for signed and dated very impressive terracotta figural sculpture by Joza Krupka titled “KISS OF TWO OCEANS”. This sculpture was made for the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914. The sculpture measures 15 ½ inches high, 24 inches wide and is 6 inches deep (61 by 39.5 by 15 cm).
The sculpture shows a nude man and woman in a deep kiss. The man kneels on the crest of the wave below him while holding his lover in one arm and a triton in the other. She lies on the wave below them and has both her arms wrapped up over his back and holding on the large frond above them. The sculpture is romantic, sultry, intriguing, and beautiful. It is signed at the back “JOZ KRUPKA 1914” along with a date along the bottom edge “1915”. At the front the piece is titled “KISS OF TWO OCEANS”. This piece is a celebration of the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914; often referred to as the Kiss of the Oceans- The meeting of the Atlantic and Pacific. The terracotta has is original dark brown patina or color.
