Imperial navy was from 1872 to 1918 the official name of the naval forces of the German Empire. Originally, it was focused on coastal defense out. From about 1900 it developed into one of the largest and most modern fleets in the world which has been favored by imperial ambition and the (Anglophile) Marine enthusiasm of the German Emperor Wilhelm II.. 1914 the Imperial Navy to the Royal Navy and in the United States Navy, the second most powerful navy in the world. This huge upgrade urged Britain out as a leading sea power and led to the Anglo-German naval race. It bore his part in the outbreak of the First World War.
That the fleet remained largely ineffective, especially the geopolitical situation of the German coasts and the lack of large overseas naval bases was owed. In World War II the German surface forces therefore did not play a major role.
