This is a amazingly spectacular example of the 1918 Illinois Commemorative Half Dollar which is referred to as the Lincoln Commemorative Half Dollar by some. This 1918 Illinois/Lincoln Commemorative Half Dollar has been graded MS64 by PCGS and is encapsulated in an old green label holder which is approximately twenty years old. Although I have owned several higher graded examples of the Illinois half, this is certainly one of the coolest looking examples I have ever seen. The toning on both sides is quite dark but the strong original mint luster of the coin remains and pops through that deep color giving the coin amazing eye appeal that is rarely seen on any coin, but especially rare on a coin like the Illinois half which is one of the tougher commemoratives to find with attractive toning. The color is a deep lustrous black near the rims which brightens to a golden yellow-red color near the center of the obverse. The reverse is slightly darker, but there is still plenty of nice color with blue and purple shining through the black toning. Although there are some light marks in the fields of the coin, the coin certainly has the look of a coin grading higher than the assigned grade, especially if you are a grader that gives extra points for amazing eye appeal.
