On August 2, 1923, Warren G. Hardingbecame the sixth of eight presidents to die in office, suffering an apparentheart attack while holed up in San Francisco’s Palace Hotel. That June he hadset out on an intended 15,000-mile cross-country speaking tour labeled theVoyage of Understanding, which included the first-ever presidential visit toAlaska. Upon returning to the Lower 48, he began suffering from cramps, indigestion, a fever and shortness of breath. His chief physician chalked it upmainly to food poisoning, but other doctors believed it to be more serious. Afew days later, just as he appeared to be improving, Harding suddenly shudderedand slumped over in bed lifeless. Though his wife refused to allow an autopsy, precipitating rumors of foul play, no evidence has ever emerged that his deathwas anything but natural.

WARREN GAMALIEL HARDING

Warren Gamaliel Harding (November 2,1865 – August 2, 1923) was the 29th President of theUnited States, serving from March 4, 1921 until his death.Although Harding died one of the most popular presidents in history, thesubsequent exposure of scandals that took place under him, such as TeapotDome, eroded his popular regard, as did revelations of anaffair by Nan Britton, one of his mistresses. In historicalrankings of the U.S. presidents, Harding is often ratedamong the worst.

Harding was born in Blooming Grove, Ohio.Except when political service took him elsewhere, he lived in rural Ohio allhis life. When not yet 20 years old, he settled in Marionand bought The Marion Star, building it into a successful newspaper. In 1899, he was elected to the OhioState Senate, and after four years there successfully ran for lieutenant governor. He was defeated for governor in 1910, but was elected to the Senate in 1914.

When Harding ran for the Republican nomination for president in 1920, hewas considered an also-ran with little chance ofsuccess. The leading candidates, such as General LeonardWood, could not gain a majority to secure the nomination, andthe convention deadlocked. Harding\'s support gradually grew until he wasnominated on the tenth ballot. He conducted a front porch campaign, remaining for the most part in Marion, and allowing the people to come to him.Running on a theme of return to normalcy,he won in a landslide over Democrat JamesM. Cox and Socialist Party candidate EugeneDebs, becoming the first sitting senator to be electedpresident.

Harding appointed a number of well-regarded figures, including AndrewMellon at the Treasury,Herbert Hoover at Commerce, and Charles Evans Hughesat the State Department.A major foreign policy achievement came with the Washington Naval Conferenceof 1921–1922, in which the world\'s major naval powers agreed on a navallimitations program that lasted a decade. Two members of his cabinet, Interior SecretaryAlbertFall and Attorney GeneralHarry Daugherty, were implicatedin corruption. The resulting scandals did not fully emerge until afterHarding\'s death, nor did word of his extramarital affairs, but both greatlydamaged his reputation. Harding died of a cerebral hemorrhagecaused by heart disease in San Francisco while on a western speaking tour; hewas succeeded by his vice president, CalvinCoolidge.
