ORIGINAL EARLYHOLLYWOOD COSTUME DRAWINGS / WATERCOLORS FROM THE \'UNITED COSTUMERS INC.\'COSTUME COMPANYOffered here are a total of 44original Hollywood production drawings & watercolors done by anartist \'Saukey\'. We have been as of this date unable to determine whoSaukey was, but they were most likely a staff member of Either United Costumersor Western Costume Co.as United was started by a former employee ofWestern Costume. We are still attempting to determine who ‘Saukey’ was throughlocal film industry sources. These images date from approximately 1925 to about 1935 or so. United Costumerswas acquired by Warner Bros by the late 30’s so that they could have their own‘in-house’costume production infrastructure. The images are all in very good orbetter condition. Each has one or more stamps of ‘United Costumers Inc.’ inpurple ink with either simply an address (perhaps an earlier stamp) or the full‘legal’ prohibition type stamp which was likely later prior to the Warner Bros.acquisition. There are 37 fully drawn and colored images and an additional 7uncolored or non-figural images which comprise the total of 44 images withinthe collection. 9 of the subjects are women and the balance are either men orchildren. All of the images are rendered on a heavy card stock measuringgenerally, 8.5 inches x 11.5 inches.

Only 12 or so of the images are shown here, but we have additional images we can email for interested buyers.

The costumesdepicted represent a wide variety of film types from early period type films tofantasy and science fiction type subject matter. Fully researching the entiregroup would require much more additional time that we have available, but wewere able to quickly determine that one of the watercolors was created for the1928 motion picture ‘The Viking’ Directed by Roy Neilland starring Pauline Starke, Donald Crisp, LeRoy Mason & AndersRandolf. The relevant watercolor withthe caption ‘Viking’ showing a man ina maroon studded top and brown pants with a leather cross-strapping below theknee was apparently a costume for ‘Roy Mason’ as is indicated on the rear ofthe image. As it clearly reads ‘Made forRoy Mason in Viking Pasture (?)’ If one views the promotional poster for‘The Viking’ one can clearly see a man wearing a costume very similar to thewatercolor shown here. The film Viking is significant in Hollywoodhistory as it was the first feature length motion picture to feature asoundtrack and the first film made with Technicolor’s Process 3 (dyetransfer process).

Early HollywoodEra (20’s & 30’s) costume drawings are scarce in the market and even lessso in this quantity. Past sale results suggest the value of these images(watercolors) should range between $75 to $300 each. Many are quite, finelyrendered, colored, and eminently displayable.
