1920s Beaux Arts/Art Deco Architectural Plan, Large Charcoal Drawing, Hibshman, Stunning!

1920SPEN & CHARCOAL BEAUX-ARTS ART DECO ARCHITECTURE PLAN

Foundedin 1894 from a core group of American architects who had studied in France atthe Ecole de Beaux-Arts, the Society ofBeaux-Arts Architects aimed to ‘remedy the vagaries and abuses of architectureas it is too generally practiced in the United States’; they were successful inthis primarily through there instituting a rigorous and highly competitive atelier based curriculum based on the FrenchSchool. They held yearly competitions where awards were given to the mostexcellent work. For your consideration is this 192os pen and watercolorclassical architecture plan for an untitled plan conceived by B. T. Hibshmanof the Cleveland School of Architecture and the University of Pennsylvania, aregular contributor to the awards process. It features a magnificent plan of amodernly designed Woolworth Building-like structure rising above the night timestreets of the city, complete automobiles and pedestrians with inner plans atthe bottom margins. Entitled “I Am a Citizen of the USA”, thisspectacular architecture plan brings to life the stark glory captured so eloquentlyin the literature of the time by F.Scott Fitzgerald in his The Great Gatsby. Quite a bit largerthan many of Hibshman’s other plans and rendered nicely in dramatic black and whitevia charcoal, this original architectural plan mirrors the grace and modernityof design as it was in 1920’s America. Spectacular.

Condition notes: Good+.This circa 1920s architecture plan measures60 inches by38 inches. This plandoes not bear the usual stamps from the Society of Beaux-Arts Architects seenin some of his other work, although the phrase “2nd Mention” issoftly written in the lower right corner ;it also states Hibshman’s name in thelower right corner. There is a light overall warp due to being stored in arolled position, and there is a faint patch of discoloration near the upperright edge. Several small edge chips as well as a 7 inches tear at the top edge(please see photos). The overall impression of this distinct, bold andclassically designed Art Deco building giving proud life to the title, I Ama Citizen of the USA, by B. T. Hibshman of Cleveland is one of refinedmastery, the work being in overall Very good condition. This vintagearchitectural plan will be safely mailed in a tube.
