DescriptionOffered is a very nice Black Sheaffer 500 Balance Fountain Pen flaunting a gorgeous Sheaffer\'s 14K Solid Gold #5 Feather Touch Two-Tone Nib. This pen dates to the mid 1930s or later. In late 1934 or early 1935, Sheaffer redesigned the Balance a bit and changed the \'Humpback\' clip by removing the \'hump\'. This is a medium pen in girth and also a full length pen - about 5 1/2 inches capped and just over 6 inches with the cap posted. I always thought that the number imprinted in the barrel was the model number. A higher number also meant a nicer pen. That was kind of true, but actually, the imprint indicated the price. So, a pen imprinted 350 was $3.50. This pen, imprinted 500 was therefore $5.00. On the models this pricing imprint was used on, I believe the highest number was 2000, but I may be wrong as the Balance was also made out of 14K Solid Gold. Still, I\'ll take all I can get at $20.00. Other models were imprinted 875, 1000, 1250, 2000, etc. so lots of different sizes, trim options, filling systems and nibs.
I tore the pen down and ultrasonically cleaned the components, even knocking the nib and feed out of the section, then finished them off with a hand polish. So, a thorough cleaning, a hand polish and then reassembly with a new ink sac. Ink capacity of this pen is quite nice. A thicker girth means a much larger ink sac. The lever filling system works just fine.
Sheaffer makes a gorgeous high quality pen and the Two-Toned nibs are just stunning. Unfortunately for me, Sheaffer nibs tend to be quite stiff but many fountain pen users prefer it. I\'m \'addicted\' to flexy Stub nibs, and Sheaffer didn\'t make many of those at all, although I\'m looking for a Sheaffer with an FS5 nib - Flexible Stub #5. I thought Feather Touch nibs would be flexible but that is not the case. Actually, the \'Feather Touch\' meant that the nib would write if you touched it to the paper \'as light as a feather\'. Many users think it means that the nib is flexy. This nib has just a hint of flex.
The Open Two-Tone Lifetime nib on this Sheaffer Balance was made in the U.S.A. and is 14K Solid Gold with a Palladium mask. An Open nib means that the nib only covers the top portion of the feed, compared to a Closed nib such as a Sheaffer Triumph, that actually wraps completely around the feed. I\'d judge it to be about a \'F\' point. It has some small visible scratches, but you\'ll need a 10X loupe to really see them clearly. It has exceptionally nice tine alignment and is a smooth writer. None of the Palladium mask has worn off either. In addition, I really like the heart shaped hole in the nib.
The condition of this pen is excellent for its age. No brassing on the clip or cap band, and all look extremely nice - very clean - no dents or bad scratches at all. The filling lever has just a hint of brassing on the edges. The clip is nice and tight on the cap as is the cap band. I really don\'t see any scratches or blemishes on the barrel, just some marks from screwing the cap on and off and from posting it.
If you are looking to add to your Sheaffer collection, or just want a very fine daily writer, then this is a very good one for you to consider. I\'m very fond of the Sheaffer Balance line.
