1933 1930\'S R73 GOUDEY INDIAN GUM R74 INDIANS PREMIUM #7 #7A CLEARS UP ORIGINAL:
$550.00

This spectacular specimen has some light wrinkles, corner creasing, small edge nicks, micro tears, corner wear, bottom edge tear and corner tears. There is adhesive residue along the top and the bottom borders on both the front and the back. Despite these obvious defects, this R74 Goudey Indian Premium retains tremendous visual appeal.

When considering what value to place on this R74 Goudey Indian Premium, it is important to remember several things.First, it took 50 Indian Gum Wrappers to obtain a single “Fine Art Print” Premium.Second, these Premiums are quite fragile and easily destroyed completely.Third, of the very few R74 Goudey Indian Premiums which were distributed by mail, only a small number survived the World War II paper drives.Fourth, only 3 of these R74 Premiums are known in the Jefferson Burdick Collection and none of them are Winold Reiss prints.

This R74 Goudey Indians Premium will be sleeved in a one-pocket page and inserted in an over-sized top load holder. The top load holder will be reinforced on both sides with thick cardboard as well as bubble wrap and will be shipped in a FedEx box (Standard Overnight in the United States or Priority Overnight outside the United States) in order to guarantee the safety, security, and protection of the fantastic Goudey Premium.

This is a superb example from the magnificent and scarce R74 Goudey Indian Premiums featured on the R73 Goudey Indian(s) wrapper offer.Generally considered to be the king of all 1930’s and 1940’s gum card premiums, this is one in a series of 19 different full color “Fine Art Print[s]” in three distinct groupings as follows:

Winold Reiss(16 different which are each 8 1/2 inches by 10 5/8 inches in size):

Wrapper Premium #8 (Type I and Type II Wrappers) or #8A (Type III Wrapper) “ARROW TOP”

Wrapper Premium #5A (Type III Wrapper) “APPEAL TO THE GREAT SPIRIT”

H. Hergel(1 which is 7.5 inches by 9 inches in size)
No Wrapper Premium Number “No. 982 WAITING THE ATTACK”

In other words the first R73 Goudey Indian Wrapper (Type I) offered 8 different Winold Reiss R74 Premiums.4 new Winold Reiss R74 Premiums were offered on the second R73 Goudey Indian Wrapper (Type II).Finally, 2 new Cyrus E. Dallin R74 Premiums were offered on the third R73 Goudey Indian Wrapper (Type III).There was some repetition of R74 Wrapper Premium subjects among the three R73 Goudey Indian Wrappers. This leaves “FISH WOLF ROBE,” “MANY HORSES LITTLE ROSEBUSH AND BABY,” “MANY MULES,” “NOT REAL BEAR WOMEN,” and “No. 982 WAITING THE ATTACK” which were introduced with the following Type III wrapper verbiage “If the picture you request is not available, we retain the right to substitute one of the others listed above or some other equally attractive Indian Picture.”

The Winold Reiss Premiums have always been confused with the typically larger Great Northern Railway RY printed materials which were distributed in a wide variety of ways from the 1920’s through the 1960’s including calendars, picture packs, menus, and brochures.Adding to the frustration of proper identification is the fact that the Copyright of “GREAT NORTHERN RY” is in the lower right corner of each legitimate Winold Reiss R74 Premium. This is because the rights to reproduce the 16 Winold Reiss paintings selected by Goudey Gum Company were owned by the Great Northern Railway and were licensed out -- a premium had to be paid for each Premium. What is distinctive is that copyrighted “C” with a circle around it is identical to the copyrighted designation on all Goudey Gum cards. This information has been thoroughly researched and confirmed by John Fawcett (The Great Goudey Find ala The Wrapper), Hugh Jones, Robert Lifson (REA), Legendary, and contributing authors on the Network 54 website message board.Further adding to the provenance is that this R74 Goudey Indian Premium originated directly from the collection of Chad Dreier. For those who are unaware of this name, Chad Dreier amassed what is probably the finest nonsport (aka non sport) trading card collection in the world – even rivaling many parts of the Jefferson Burdick collection which is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

We will be listing 18 of these beautiful premiums.
