DESCRIPTION: Original vintage photograph, 1941, showsPrivate Murray Waldenburg before going to Brooklyn for the World Series of baseball. The story of Private Murray Waldenburg began in September of 1941 when he took offense when an officer at Camp Wheeler made derogatory comments about Murray\'s beloved Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team. The press picked up the story and camp commander Brigadier General John Hester gave Private Waldenburg leave to attend two games of the World Series. He was welcomed at LaGuardia Airport by fans and officials, then escorted by police to Yankee Stadium for the opening game. The story made newspapers nationwide and was a positivediversion about baseball and the military to help take some of the pre-war jitters out of the public. Identification of photos is taken from captions in a photo album, writing on the back, or from similar photos in the collection.

From a series of photos taken by Army Private First Class Richard Bowers Oliver while stationed at Camp Wheeler, near Macon, Georgia. From the breadth of the subject matter, it appears that Oliver was an official camp photographer in the Public Relations Office, and the photos he took provide rare glimpses into the everyday life of an American Soldier during World War II. Camp Wheeler was used as an infantry replacement center from 1940-45. At the height of the training effort, the camp contained 17000 trainees and 3000 cadre personnal. Among units staged there was the 7th Infantry Division.

Richard Bowers Oliver was a news photographer, born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, May 19, 1913. He moved to Auburn Maine and resided at 25 Hampshire Street. He worked for the Lewiston Journal Newspaper but appears to have done a lot of freelance work as a news photographer. We are in the process of listing about 2000 of his great photographs, so please check our other offerings.
