Livingstone\'s Last Journey

By Reginald Coupland

DETAILS

A first edition of Coupland\'s excellent biographyLivingstone\'s Last Journey, illustrated with five maps.

As described in the preface, David Livingstone (1813 - 1873)was one of the \"Great Victorians, and the dramatic story of his last journey touched the heart of the English-speaking world as much as anything else that happened in that age. This book re-tells that story - from its happy confident start to its tragic ending in the wilderness of \'Darkest Africa\'\".

Perhaps one of the most popular national heroes of the late 19th century in Victorian Britain, Livingstone had a mythic status, which operated on a number of interconnected levels: Protestant missionary martyr, working-class \"rags to riches\" inspirational story, scientific investigator and explorer, imperial reformer, anti-slavery crusader, and advocate of commercial empire. His fame as an explorer helped drive forward the obsession with discovering the sources of the River Nile that formed the culmination of the classic period of European geographical discovery and colonial penetration of the African continent.

Sir Reginald Coupland, (1884-1952) was a prominent historian of the British Empire who between 1920 and 1948 held the Beit Professorship of Colonial History at the University of Oxford. He is most known for his scholarship on African history. Coupland was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1948.
