This sale is for a genuine 1948 Kerry Lee Pictorial Map Town City Plan of Oxfordshire, Oxford, England, UK, featuring a colorful Chromolithograph Ariel Bird’s Eye View of the City of Oxford (known as the City of Spires) and Oxford University / University of Oxford and her colleges.
Artist Kerry Lee published his pictorial map of Oxfordshire at Pictorial Maps Ltd., for the Travel Association of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the year 1948. The approximate dimensions of this Oxford University College Plan measures 18.0” (H) x 23.0” (W) or 460MM x 582MM, respectively. Framed and professionally matted, the work of art is significantly larger.
This is a very decorative map depicting Oxford, Oxford University, 26 of her College’s, and the associated emblems / Coat of Arm’s for each Oxford College, surrounding the border of the old antique Oxford OXON map.
Artist Kerry Ernst Lee, born in 1903, was a British/English artist best known for his series of chromolithograph advertising posters issued by British Railways, which were designed and used to boost British tourism after WWII.
The condition of this map is truly excellent; however, it is worth noting for the sake of accuracy that the edges of the margins (NOT the margins themselves), show sign of wear (e.g. tiny rips, small tears, small missing fragments), which is perfectly normal and expected for the age of this map, its scarcity, and the fact it was not collectible at the time, serving as simply decorative at the time with no intrinsic value.
