Description

This Sheaffer Statesman or Valiant (the definition of a Valiant is this pen, but with a two-tone 14K Palladium masked nib, so I think the PdAg nib indicates a Statesman) dates between 1952 and 1959 and has been completely serviced. The Snorkel filling system was added in 1952 as an enhancement to the already popular Touchdown filling system. The earlier model with the Touchdown filling system was also called the Statesman. I disassembled the pen completely - removed the nib section, the filling system etc. I ultrasonically cleaned all of the components and installed a new ink sac, barrel O-ring seal and the seal in the nib section that the Snorkel tube passes through - called a point seal. This Snorkel Touchdown filling system is now in very nice working order.

To fill the pen, unscrew the knob which advances the Snorkel tube then pull the silver tube out all the way. Put the snorkel tube into a bottle of ink then press the Touchdown filling system knob all the way down rather quickly. Unlike say a syringe, the Touchdown filling system fills on the down stroke, not as it is fully extended. After pressing the knob all the way down, wait about 7 seconds to give the sac time to expand and pull ink in, then rotate the knob clockwise which retracts the Snorkel tube and screws the knob back on.

The imprint on the barrel reads: \'W. A. SHEAFFER PEN CO.\' then \'FORT MADISON, IOWA, U.S.A.\' and below that \'MADE IN U.S.A.\'. The nib on this pen is a Sheaffer\'s - made in the U.S.A. and is a Sterling Silver Palladium Masked nib. It is quite stunning! I\'d judge it to be about a \'F\' point and quite stiff. This nib is gorgeous - visually stunning. Palladium is used quite frequently in jewelry making as it has a very bright luster to it and is quite durable. Another point of interest is the slightly upturned nib tines at the tip. This is done on purpose. It makes it easier to write with the nib upside down as this nib was designed to do. An upside down writing nib will give you a thinner line.

This Pastel Gray (Sheaffer\'s official name for the color) Lifetime Sheaffer Snorkel pen measures just over 5 1/2\" closed and about 6 3/8\" with the cap posted. I\'m just not seeing any noticeable bad scratches or nicks, so just the usual light stuff from normal use. The gold-filled clip and wide cap band are both brass and blemish free and are nice and tight on the cap. The White Dot sits just above the clip on the cap. This is one of those Sheaffer designs where the cap will loosen and tighten with about 3/4 of a turn of the cap - a nice \'quick draw\' feature.

Overall, an excellent fountain pen for a Sheaffer that is around 60 years old! This is a great writer with a stunning nib. If you are looking to add to your Sheaffer collection, or just want a very fine daily writer, then this is a very good one for you to consider. The cap posts nicely and the pen is well balanced.

Oh, forgot to mention it, but on the under side of the nib, and \'M4\' etching is visible. This is a Sheaffer nib code. The \'M\' means a Medium point, although I\'d judge it as a Fine point, and the \'4\' means that it is a Palladium masked Silver nib. Following is a list of Sheaffer first digit nib codes:

  • G - Shorthand (Gregg)
  • A - Accountant (needle fine)
  • X - Extra Fine F - Fine
  • M - Medium
  • B - Broad (Coarse)
  • S - Stub
The second digit codes used are as follows:
  • 2 - 14 karat gold open nib
  • 3 - 14 karat two-toned palladium masked open nib
  • 4 - Palladium-silver Triumph nib
  • 5 - 14 karat two-toned palladium masked Triumph nib
  • 6 - Palladium-silver open nib
There were also additional nib code letters applied as either a prefix or suffix:F - Flexible (as a prefix),L - Left Oblique (as a suffix),R - Right Oblique (as a suffix). Of course, nib codes changed over time as Sheaffer added other nibs to their line-up such as an \'Accountant\' or \'Music\' nib.
