DescriptionThis Sheaffer\'s Lifetime Imperial Touchdown Filler Fountain Pen is in very nice condition. The pen is fitted with a 14K Solid Gold Inlaid nib. The Imperial line was just one step down from Sheaffer\'s PFM Touchdown Snorkel fillers and by eliminating the Snorkel filling system, it was less expensive to produce. PFM\'s and Imperials are often confused, but the PFM was a top of the line Snorkel filling model with a thicker cap and barrel. The PFM line was introduced by Sheaffer in 1959. The original PFM incorporated Sheaffer\'s Snorkel clean filling system. The cap was fitted with the new loss proof clip with inner spring action, which was designed to fit any thickness of fabric. This Imperial has the same Lifetime clip design.
The Imperial line was introduced in 1961. The barrel imprint is visible and says \'SHEAFFER MADE IN U.S.A.\'. The trim on the pen is gold filled and looks really nice - no visible brassing. I tore the pen down and ultrasonically cleaned all of the parts. The Imperial was introduced as a cartridge filler but good ideas die hard, so Sheaffer began offering the pen as a TD filler as well, but in much smaller quantities. The pen up for sale is a TD filler. After tear-down and cleaning, I installed a new ink sac and also a new barrel o-ring seal - necessary to get a good fill. Unlike say like a syringe, the TD fills the pen with ink on the down stroke. The cap has the normal wear scratches but no nicks, dings, or bite marks. The barrel looks equally as nice. This is a very clean pen. There is the Sheaffer White Dot on the clip.
The nib on this pen is a Sheaffer\'s - made in the U.S.A. and is 14K Solid Gold. It is an Inlaid nib and is about a \'BB\' point. It is gorgeous! The tip of the nib is huge! The minute I saw it, I\'m thinking \'B\' or \'BB\' and that maybe it was re-tipped. Heck, this might even be a triple \'B\'. This is an original Sheaffer factory ground inlaid nib and I just don\'t see \'B\' or \'BB\'s hardly ever. This is an extremely smooth writing nib. If it had a bit of flex, it would be in my pocket, but it is rather stiff. This would make a killer Signature pen.
This Black Lifetime Sheaffer Imperial pen measures right at 5 3/8\" capped and about 5 3/4\" with the cap posted. The cap posts quite nicely. Because this pen is made out of plastic, it is extremely light. I like it. With the cap posted, the length and balance is quite nice for my hand, but generally I only post caps on shorter pens. I actually like the girth better than the thicker PFM - just my personal preference.
Overall, a superb fountain pen that is around 55+ years old! If you are looking to add to your Sheaffer collection, or just want a very fine daily writer or a beautiful signature pen, then this Imperial would be an excellent choice! It was offered in only 5 colors, but had the right combination of nib design (inlaid and 14K Gold), weight, girth, trim and filling system.
