The face of Old AbeCharles Hamilton and Lloyd Ostendorf: Lincoln in Photographs: An Album of Every Known Pose. Stated first edition. Norman, Oklahoma: University of Oklahoma Press, 1963. Oatmeal cloth with gilt-stamped spine,10.5 x 8.5 in., 409 pages, illustrated throughout. Ex-library with a few stamps and label remnants; light soiling to covers and wear to extremities; ink scribbles to front endpapers and title page; and linen tape reinforcement to hinges. Despite these mainly cosmetic faults, the text and photos are complete, clean, and unmarked, and the book is sound and wholly usable.

The essential cornerstone reference in Lincoln iconography. From the preface: \"Every known photograph of Lincoln is printed in this book. Some appear for the first time. Others are reproduced for the first time from the original glass negative or collodion plates, unretouched and uncropped. Supplementing the photographs are vivid word-pictures of Lincoln by those who knew him. . . . There is an urgent need for a definitive book that will provide a close-up of Lincoln as the camera saw him--his likeness with no added touch. . . .

\"Lincoln\'s face was the delight of photographers. He sat for thirty-one different cameramen on sixty-one occasions. Alexander Gardner took thirty pictures of him, more than any other photographer; Anthony Berger is second with thirteen; Brady is third with eleven. Preston Butler also took eleven photographs of Lincoln, but only three survive. . . . There are 119 separate photographs of Lincoln--39 beardless, 80 with beard. Among them are 32 stereographic or three-dimensional views, over five times as many as were known a few years ago. Each group of stereographs . . . is considered a single pose. . . .

\"Six photographs of Lincoln are published for the first time in this volume; seven more make their initial appearance in book form. Still another half-dozen are reproduced for the first time in their original or uncropped state. Of the stereographic poses, 27 variants are here first printed. Also in this book are 108 unpublished photographs of people and places known intimately to Lincoln. . . .\"

Long out of print, quite desirable, and increasingly difficult to find.
