This Holy Icon is an exact replica of Byzantine art made of a special metal mixture with traditional techniques. It features representations of Jesus Christ And Theotokos (Virgin Mary) in dimensional relief with silver and gold metal accents. It was made in Greece and purchased by my aunt on a trip in 1964. (See tag on back.)This icon is 7 1/2 x 9 inches mounted on a piece of painted black wood with a hanger on the back. I am not sure of the content of the metals, but the tag does not say silver.
The tradition of elaborate icons may have started in the early Orthodox years where the hand-painted icons started to be covered with silver or copper material giving this unique look to Orthodox Icons. According to the tradition, this elaborate style started as a \"tama\" in Greek, a gift to His Name.
