Almost certainly A&R Coffer 1964 Rolling Stones brooch also including a photo of the Beatles and 10 other early-mid 1960s bands.
The idea of making a book-type locketfeaturing concertina-type fold outpictureswas as old as the 20thcentury itself, with similaritems having been produced for royal coronations and containing souvenir postcards ofholiday destinationsand popularattractions by several different companies.
Similarly, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, there were several different companies catering to teenage fans by producingitems of cheap costumejewellery featuring photos of popular music artists.
Put the two together, though, and you can pretty much narrow down the manufacturer to the London firm ofA&RCoffer.
The fold-out concertinas were supplied by pop postcard company Star Pics (or Starpics) and would always consist of11 photos, either ofoneartist or group (most commonly the Beatles) or - for those whose loyalties were a little less specific- a selection ofpictures of other hit-makers of the day, as here. These \'variety\' fold-outs were consistent for long periods. In the late \'50s, early \'60s,they depicted Cliff and Elvis and someother teenage idols; from 1964, though, they were updatedto featurethe beat groups who were now dominating the charts: the Stones, the Beatles etc.
Coffer made two types of housing for the photos: one with a mocked-up leather binding fastened with a clasp, which usuallyhad somethinggeneric like \'Top Pops\' in gilt on the front (BBC TV show Top of the Pops started broadcasting in January1964);and theother, likethis one, made of gold tone metal, withanotherphotograph of one particular artist or group undera perspex cover on the front. Some have \'Made in England\' stampedon theback, some don\'t.
The booklets were either attached to a bow brooch fastener, like this one, or to a short keyring chain, or hung on a longnecklace chain. (So the permutations were just about endless.)The front cover portrait here is of the Rolling Stones, which probablydated this tomid 1964, and the first photo you seewhen you open the locket is the Beatles.
Measures 1 & 1/4 inches X 1 inch (3 x 2.5 cm).
The housing is in good condition. The perspex photo covering has some minor scuffing, but it doesn\'t obscure the photo. There is a little staining to the top of two of the innermost portraits, but it mostly affects the back. Please look atthe pictures closely before offerding.
