The original company was founded in 1801 by Mary Barker. Her son William joined in partnership with a silversmith called Creed and the firm became, for a time, Barker & Creed. By 1871, the partnership had dissolved and until 1885 the firm was trading as Barker Brothers (William & Matthias Barker) in Paradise Street, Birmingham. After 1885 it continued to trade as Barker Bros but possibly under Thomas and Matthias Barker. In 1907 it became a limited company. The company moved to Constitution Hill in the 1920s under Herbert Edward Barker and Frank Ernest Barker, where it remained until the 1980s. In 1921 the firm was amalgamated with Levi & Salaman. In the 1960s the firm merged with Ellis & Co (Birmingham) Ltd. Later the name of the firm was changed to Barker Ellis Silver Co Ltd.
