George Seferis (1900 – 1971), wasa Greek poet, author, translator, and diplomat. He was one of the mostimportant Greek poets of the 20th century, and a Nobel laureate. Seferis was a career diplomat in the GreekForeign Service, culminating in his appointment as Ambassador to the UnitedKingdom from 1957 to 1962. In 1963,Seferis was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature \"for his eminentlyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world ofculture.\" Seferis was the first Greek to receive the Nobel Prize forLiterature. In 1936, Seferis published a translation of T. S. Eliot\'s The WasteLand. In 1914, Seferis and his family moved to Athens. He studied law at theSorbonne in Paris and entered diplomatic service in 1925. Seferis was exiledfrom Smyrna when it was claimed by Turkey; he subsequently spent many yearsliving and working outside of Greece. Before World War II, he was posted in Englandand Albania. During the war he moved with the Free Greek Government to Egypt,South Africa, and Italy. After the war, his diplomatic posts included Ankara,London, Lebanon, and Syria. Seferis served as Royal Greek Ambassador to theUnited Kingdom from 1957 to 1961. In 1962 he retired and moved to Athens.

Wandering and exile are present in Seferis’s poetry.Seferis’ work is attuned to the history of Greece—the Nobel Prize committeerecognized him as a “representative Hellenic poet.” His poetry often intertwinescontemporary speech and experience with Homeric myth, and many of his poemsdepict the landscape of the Mediterranean. In their foreword to George Seferis:Collected Poems (1995), translators Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard noted:“The distinguishing attribute of Seferis’s genius—one that he shares with Yeatsand Eliot—was always his ability to make out of a local politics, out of apersonal history or mythology, some sort of general statement or metaphor.” George Seferis was an Elected HonoraryForeign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and became anHonorary Fellow of the Modern Language Association.
