This historical volume is a valuable primary resource on the American Civil War era and contains volume 1 of “the reports of a young French observer who traveled in the Northern States and Eastern Canada toward the end of the Civil War.… The author talked with proponents of both Union and Confederate philosophies.” Volume 2 was released by Lakeside in 1975.

The Lakeside Classics are reprints of fascinating first-person accounts in American history. These special books were issued for sale. Rather, D. D. Donnelley printed a particular title each year and distributed it to employees and customers as a holiday gift.

I have listed other titles from this series, so please watch for them.

Books in this series are of particular interest to scholars and students of American history who seek contemporary narratives.
