About PCGS – The Global Standard of Rate Coin Grading

Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) is the most respected name in third-party coin certification. By establishing auniversal grading standard, PCGS has paved the way for coin enthusiasts to enjoy buying and selling coins with confidence.

The advent of the third-party appraisal of a coin\'s physical condition (which is the basis of its grade), backed bythe PCGS Guaranteeand our network of reputableAuthorized Dealers, provides a dependable form of protection for rare coin collectors. Our respected grading standard has enabled PCGS-graded coins to realize record prices in the marketplace. When experienced collectors buy coins, they often buy them certified by the name they trust – PCGS.

In addition to standardized grading, PCGS offers a guarantee of grading accuracy and authenticity for each coin we encapsulate. With decades of combined experience, PCGS graders are selected from an elite group ofworld-class numismatic experts– some of the most respected and admired in the rare coin industry. As we receive submissions, each coin goes through a step-by-step grading process which ensures the utmost care and consideration of your prized numismatic investment. Our experts handle each coin as if it were part of their own collection.

Each expert works independently in a controlled Environment that provides optimum conditions for studying the characteristics and physical condition of each coin. A series of graders enters independent determinations in a computer database until a consensus is reached and the final grade is assigned. To augment their high level of experience, our graders can refer to comprehensive grading sets of coins in order to adhere to PCGS grading standards.

PCGS also offers a range of resources including PCGS CoinFacts, a comprehensive online encyclopedia which is expanding to add more coins;PCGS Population Report, a census of all coins ever graded by PCGS;Certified Coin Exchange, the most respected online dealer-to-dealer trading network; and the uniquePCGS Set Registry, where collectors can showcase their collections and interact and compete with other serious collectors.

PCGS certifies coins from over 100 countries including United States, Japan, Germany, New Zealand, Poland, Switzerland, Great Britain, France, Italy, China, Spain, Greece, Mexico, Russia, Canada, India, Hong Kong, Philippines, Australia, Singapore and African countries. PCGS standardized grading has forever changed the process of buying and selling coins, increasing confidence in buyers and sellers around the world.

Independently graded coins, especially those in PCGS holders, give both buyers and sellers peace of mind. That is why PCGS-graded coins earn more trust and realise higher prices.

The PCGS Grading Process

PCGS grading process is comprised of four aspects. These include receiving, grading, encapsulation and final verification. These processes are all completed under the supervision of a highly trained security team to ensure the safety of the employees and the coins that they are grading.

Receiving- Upon receiving a grading order, PCGS carefully checks it against the customers invoice and provides each coin with a unique certification number. This provides PCGS with the ability to track each coin through every step of the grading process.

Grading Room- PCGS employs a collection of the worlds most respected and knowledgeable numismatists who work individually to grade each coin. This process is then repeated for each coin, therefore involving multiple numismatists who calculate the precise grade of each coin.

Coin Encapsulation – Once the coin has proceeded through the grading process it is sonically sealed inside its protective, tamper-evident PCGS NumisCap holder. This protects the label within the case as well as the coin. The label provides the coins information, grade, certification number, date, denomination and unique barcode ensuring it is tamper proof.

Final Verification – The final check of the sealed coin begins with it returning to the grading room where a “verifier” examines the final sealing of the case to ensure the coin will incur no damage. The coin grade is also verified to make certain that the grading process has been of the upmost quality.

What is the Grading Scale?

The PCGS grading system incorporates the Numerical grading system, a modern grading system based on numbers instead of the previous worded system of the Australian adjectival system which incorporated Fine, Very Fine, Extremely Fine and uncirculated. However, before buying PCGS graded coins it is important to note that F, VF, EF and aUNC in the numerical system do not represent the same grade in the Australian adjectival system. This is not due to a difference in grading but rather a more accurate system as the incorporation of ten numbers narrows the grade in each category to a specific level. This results in a system of grading with increased precision thus improving the ability to collect a higher quality of coins.

Why Buy PCGS Graded Coins?

There are many benefits for buying PCGS graded coins along with getting them graded by this prestigious company ranging from securing the quality of the product and standard of the coin along with having the ability for your coin to be seen in the coin population database. These factors support the sales of these precious goods and insure the value of the coin is upheld. This provides security for numismatics buyer and the sellers and expands the ability for the expansion of global numismatics.
