1990 Shearwater Art Pottery Large Cicada Cicala Wall Pocket Vase Exc Mississippi For Sale
example of Shearwater Pottery comes from the estate of a major Midwestern
American art pottery collector. The
collection will be sold over the next few weeks. Please see my other sales for more
Shearwater pieces from this estate.
Shearwater pottery is a family business founded in 1928 by Peter Anderson, with his parents
George Walter Anderson, Sr. and Annette
McConnell Anderson. The local Ocean
Springs, Mississippi clays were used to make Shearwater wares in the 1930s, and
the company continues to make pottery today.
This large cicada hanging
wall pocket/vase is marked “Shearwater 1990” and measures 16” long. It is a very high gloss (which makes photos
glarey--sorry). It features a lovely grey,
tan, brown and black combination with yellow eyes. It’s in excellent condition--no cracks,
chips, repairs or damage of any kind.
Note the small spot of dark glaze in one of the eyes and the rougher
texture of the eyes compared to the rest of the piece. These are factory and not damage. Even the two hanging holes are excellent.
