\'VAN CLEEF & ARPELS\' playing cards. Editions Dusserre. Paris. France. 1990s (Printed by Boéchat & Frères.) SCARCE DECK
Artist: H SIMONI (Artist\'s signature in print on one of the Jokers)
A luxurious edition: solid gold edges and a black background for the designs. Adding to this \"rich\" look are the diamonds that form the special suit colours in each design. The design of the courts looks classical, but it\'s a mixture of features from different patterns.
Special are the diamonds that are on the crowns of the Kings and Queens. One of the features from the classic French pattern is the shield that the Jack of Clubs holds in his hand.
Usually to show the tax law date, but here it mentions the name of Van Cleef & Arpels.Diamonds form another special feature of this deck. They make the suitcolours in the designs of the numbercards and are also on the aces, specially embellished with a string of diamonds as an outline.
The diamonds almost come to live by the way they were designed. There\'s an actual depth suggested in their design. The two jokers hold a mirror, reflecting the Place Vendome in Paris. (c.1906: Creation of the Maison Van Cleef & Arpels and opening of 22 Place Vendôme, Paris)Non-standard ACES & pip cards.

With their name derived from the Greek word “adamas” – meaning unchangeable – diamonds have long been prized as mysterious fragments of eternity.

In Tibet, they were thought to illuminate the path of truth. Hinduism teaches that they encapsulate the Sun’s fire. For the ancient Greeks, diamonds were the tears of the Gods. For the Romans, they were splinters of fallen stars.

But more than anything, diamonds have symbolized the constant flame of true love. Traditional keepsakes for 10th and 60th wedding anniversaries, their magic reminds us that some things do indeed last forever.
