19C CHINESE CARVED & GILDED LACQUER CHANAB OFFERING BOX STANDS ON BUDDHIST LIONS:

Description....For sale we have here a superb 19c Chinese finely carved and decorated six sided offering alter with a gilded lacquer cover called a \'Chanab Offering Box\' with the alter itself standing on six movableBuddhist lion feet being produced in Northern Guangdong, China and then used locally as well as being exported to other Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. Because of the amount of usage and the fragility of these wonderful prayer or offering boxes many are in poor condition but this particular one has survived quite well. Both the lacquered cover and the alter itself have been made of pine wood then carved and decorated in a high sheen gold, red and black lacquer with the cover or box showing finely executed scenes on all six sides with the top left unadorned and the inside shows the raw unfinished pine wood. The alter has multi levels with the top being used for the offerings which could have been a metal tray with points to hold items or a red lacquered wooden tray. The 3D carved mid section normally shows on the center panel of both sides scenes from Chinese legends with other carved panels flanking each side of the center one along with a carved and pierced bracket to each end. There are railings and well done key fret type fences on the different levels with the bottom section being held up by six cabriolet style legs with red ballsattachedto the undersides along with movable Buddhist lions having red accents under each leg all attached to a six sided lacquered plank or base. Here is a great 19c important religious object and would make a great addition to ones Chinese lacquerware collection as well as a collection of Buddhist religious antiques.
Condition....Overall this box is in excellent condition with a few small touch ups on the exterior of the box or cover and I an not 100% certain but on one side of the alter there may be one of the center carved and gilded apron sections missing but actually because it is on the backside I was not sure it was ever there but it probably was and other than needing a clean and a buff this is a great and impressive large Chanab.
