19th Century Oil Painting In Need Of Restoration:
Here is an antique oil painting on canvas which I recently picked up locally at the beginnings of an estate sale. The rest of the art there has since been sent to an sale house. Please note: it is very dark brown in it's "as found" untouched condition. The first six pictures were taken indoors; the second picture is true to life, along with the fourth through sixth showing the edges. As it is, it is too dark to enjoy, and needs to be restored professionally. The last six pictures were taken outdoors on a sunny afternoon, and the camera picked up a lot of detail through the darkened finish! The subject is very interesting. A woman is making sausage, with four children off to the left corner while one child is blowing up a casing like a balloon. There is a variety of cut up meat carcasses and bowls of sausage and herbs to the right and center. There is possibly a signature in the lower right corner, but I really can't tell. It measures 19" wide by 13 1/4" high. I am estimating this painting to be European 19th Century from the clothing, subject matter and construction of the stretcher. I am not an artist or art dealer, or know anything about restoration. Questions or helpful information are always welcome.
