Very early 1800\'s turned wood wooden treen lidded sugar bowl or box of large size, measuring 4 1/2\" wide at the base. The lid, where it fits into the jar, is 4\" wide, but it\'s wider, of course at its outside measure of about 4 3/8.\" The box is 4 1/8\" tall without its lid and about 5 3/8\" tall with it lid on to the top of the finial. The lid and its finial are in perfect shape structurally, but the finish is worn, except for the outer inch or so. The base has a crack that goes through and it\'s about 2 1/2\" long. The base also has damage to the bottom where two cracks meet at right angles, one about 1 1/8\" long and the other about 3 \" long. The original vinegar graining is present on only about the top inch of the bowl and there\'s very little of the original finish left below that. Still, a wonderful example of early American treen. Beautiful turn lines throughout the inside of the lid and the inside of the bottom of the bowl. Photos 8 and 9 are with the flash, which allows you to see the remaining vinegar grain painting. The last photo is how I displayed this piece inside another slightly larger lidless example. I\'ve found all my examples here in my local area over the last 41 years, all but one at farm sales and one at an estate sale in a house in Grand Rapids. Many of the people who settled here earliest came from Massachusetts or New York and brought their valuable household items with them.
