Description

2 ANTIQUE/VINTAGE CARVED THAI STATUES

Striking pair of antique/vintage hand carved wooden statues, each measuring about 9-1/2\" tall. Featuring kneeling Teppanom mythology angels, they are intricately carved and accented in gold on the front over a red painted exterior. Teppanom are mythological angels, and part of the Buddhist tradition in Thailand. It is believed that these angels descended from the heavens to pay their respects when the Buddha reached enlightenment and to celebrate such a monumental event. Pair is dressed in traditional costumes with wing shoulder, head and leg accents as well as tiered crown - they kneel in the respectful Thai greeting, palms together in a wai. These belonged to my Grandmother and she purchased them on one of her many trips around the world -- they bear square nail holes in each knee front from being mounted to a piece of furniture or possibly a temple entrance - the wood around the nail holes has leeching discoloration from the metal - each is etched with the number N0570303. Condition is good with age related wear -- one has sustained damage to the crown point and wing tip back - both have overall fine nicks to the gold paint exposing the red underneath - guessing the wood is teak or similar. I cannot estimate an exact date except to say they at least date to the 1950s, which is when I first remember seeing them in her home. Just a striking old pair of Teppanom angels -- lovely addition to any home, collection or display.
