About Using Paper Napkins As Decoupage Artwork
Also known as serviettes, paper napkins are an excellent source of artwork for decoupage. Because they are thinner than most decoupage art, you need to know a few special techniques that apply specifically to using paper napkins in your decoupage designs. In most applications you\'ll want to cut the paper napkin before you remove the 2nd or 3rd ply of paper from the reverse of the napkin. The ply layers are white paper and provide the background for the napkin artwork so, you\'ll want to prepare your surface by painting it white before you apply the napkin. Otherwise, any other color as your background will show through the thin serviette paper and alter the colors of your art and design. To apply the paper napkin you can choose between two different techniques. The first process used by many is to position the artwork onto the surface and then brush the adhesive (either Mod Podge or white craft glue thinned with water) onto the top of the paper napkin. The paper napkin (serviette) is very thin and so the glue will soak through the artwork and adhere the art to the surface. After letting it dry, check the napkin to be certain all the paper is securely glued to the surface. If needed, apply some more glue and get all your art fixed into place. Let it dry again and then finish/protect with a water based polyurethane or Mod Podge over the top depending on which product\'s dry appearance you prefer. The 2nd way to apply the paper napkins (and in my opinion the best) is to paint a white craft glue onto the surface (after you\'ve followed the same paper napkin preparation steps above) and let that glue dry completely before positioning the serviette artwork. Once it is dry you can easily move the art around on the surface without it sticking or tearing. When it\'s in the place you want it to stay, use an artist brush with water to wet the napkin (and the glue underneath) and the glue will \"reverse\" itself, turn tacky again and your artwork will adhere nicely. As you \"paint\" with the artist brush and water, the paper with expand a bit and if you work slowly you can get it to relax and lay perfectly flat as if the artwork has been painted onto the surface without wrinkles! This 2nd process is a bit more time consuming however you can achieve really flawless and beautiful serviette (paper napkin artwork) results. After your art is in place and dry, finish and protect it by using one of thewater based finishes discussed above.
