The square rig allowed the ship to take advantage of steady trade winds and currents while the fore- and aft-sails were set length ways along the boat so the ship could sail closer into the wind. This combination made the brigantine ideal for coastal sailing where winds are more variable. It was an effective ship for the seal hunt and also as a trade vessel to the West Indies and Brazil.Every ship was designed to exploit certain advantages. Whether it was speed, maneuverability, cargo capacity or ease of handling, the small and handy brigantine played an important role in the marine history of North America.Perhaps this is why these magnificent vessels have such a powerful allure.
