in 2007, the First Spouse series of gold coins began. This gold coin featuring Elizabeth Monroe was the first release of 2008. It's made from 1/2 Troy oz. of 24 karat gold and has a face value of $10. This coin had a low mintage compared to other modern US coins, but compared to other First Spouse gold coins its mintage was moderate. The uncirculated version had a final count of 4,462.

The obverse of this coin shows a portrait of Elizabeth Monroe. This design was created by Joel Iskowitz. The dates that Mrs. Monroe was First Lady can be found below her portrait. This side is also inscribed with her name, the date of issue, and the Mint mark.

The design on the reverse is the work of Donna Weaver. This scene depicts Elizabeth during the reopening of the White House. It was closed for some time following the War of 1812 due to a fire started by the British.

This coin was submitted to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) for grading and the result was very good. From their 70 point scale, it was assigned the grade of Mint State 69. That means this coin is nearly perfect and may appear flawless to the naked eye.
