Released in January of 2009, this fabulous rendition from the original Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagle is creating quite a stir. This coin has all the style and pizazz that the original coin mustered, yet still a modern US Mint coin. The design represents the best of what the Mint has to offer and celebrates this great nation at the same time.

The coin is a 1 Troy oz. Ultra High Relief coin with edge lettering and struck on .9999 fine gold. The reason that the mint uses 24Kt gold is because 22 karat gold is not as malleable as the 24 karat. This is the only way they can make a high relief coin in such a wonderful style. The coin features Augustus Saint-Gaudens vision of the Lady Liberty on the obverse and the edge of the coin has 4 additional stars representing the current 50 states at time of production. On the edge - it also includes the inscription of "IN GOD WE TRUST" - which was not on the original 1907 version.

The obverse has the Roman numeral system date of 2009 "MMIX" - using the same style from the original Double Eagle dated 1907. Lady Liberty is shown holding her torch and lighting the way towards progress for this great nation. She stands in front of the Sun with the bright sun’s rays flaring in the background. In her left hand - Lady Liberty is holding an olive branch to signify the hope for peace and continued victory over all that will come. This design was the vision of Mint Director Ed Moy - encompassing the original Saint-Gaudens design into this 21st century coinage. In 1906, the original conceptual design for the Gold Double Eagle was presented to President Theodore Roosevelt in December of that year for approval. He went on to order the mint to make experimental examples of the coin – but they had to match the exact design the artist had created. The Mint engraver Charles Barber reportedly took his job very seriously and worked on this project –even though he and Saint-Gaudens apparently despised one another. He engaged the assistance of Henry Weil to accomplish creating the die hubs for the examples the President had ordered.

The reverse design of this masterfully designed coin has the majestic bald eagle in flight along with the inscriptions: "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "TWENTY DOLLARS" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." The eagle is also shown in front of the sun with its bright rays flaring in the background.
