How to Grow a Dwarf Banana

If you want to raise bananas in your backyard but don\'t have a green thumb, don\'t worry. Bananas are one of the easiest plants to grow, thanks to their fast growth rate, ability to thrive in poor soil, and their relatively pest-free nature. Banana trees can quickly add a hint of the tropics to the landscape around your house. Consider growing a dwarf banana tree, such as a \"Dwarf Cavendish\" or a \"Dwarf Brazilian\" variety, because these trees don\'t get as big as their larger counterparts and are therefore easier to manage.

Choose a planting site that receives full sun. Dwarf banana trees grown in shadier locations experience a slower growth rate and may not produce fruit as quickly.

2

Use a garden spade to break up the soil to a depth of a foot. Add a couple of inches of organic matter, such as compost or rotted manure, to balance soil moisture and drainage -- dwarf banana trees thrive best in well-drained conditions -- and nutrient levels.

3

Add 1/2 pound of 6-2-12 garden fertilizer to the planting site, incorporating it thoroughly into the top 12 to 18 inches of soil

Trim off the leaves of the dwarf banana tree sucker that you are planting, using either scissors or pruning shears.

5

Plant the banana sucker, burying its roots and its base up to the dirt line on the sucker where it was originally buried. Space the dwarf banana tree 20 feet from any other vegetation, and 8 feet away from any other dwarf banana trees.

6

Water the planting site, and repeat watering every seven to 10 days to maintain soil moisture to a depth of approximately a foot. Dwarf banana trees are very thirsty plants, and generally need more than an inch of water every week, depending on your localized weather conditions.

7

Spread a 6-inch-deep layer of mulch, such as wood chips or bark fragments, around your dwarf banana tree. This reduces weed problems, keeps the soil cool and helps conserve moisture. Additionally, the mulch will slowly decompose and enhance the underlying soil.

8

Repeat your fertilization four months after the planting date and every four months after that, using 2 pounds. of 10-5-20 at every application. Always apply fertilizer immediately before irrigation. The water helps carry the fertilizer\'s nutrients down to the dwarf banana tree\'s roots.

Things You Will Need
  • Garden spade
  • Compost or similar organic matter
  • 6-2-12 fertilizer
  • Pruning shears
  • Dwarf banana tree sucker
  • Mulch
  • 10-5-20 fertilizer
Tip
  • It generally takes 15 months before your dwarf banana tree starts flowering. Banana trees only produce fruit once per tree. After you\'ve harvested your bananas, cut the tree down to its base.
Warning
  • Weeds compete with your dwarf banana tree for crucial soil moisture and nutrients. For optimal health, keep a weed-free zone 2 feet around your dwarf banana tree
