Originally designed in 1910 by SirHerbert Baker and built to represent the unification of the new Union’s citizens , the Union Buildings hasbecome synonymous with the new South Africa. In 1994 the Union Buildings playedhost to the jubilant inauguration of former President Nelson MANDELA.

This has now become moresignificant as Nelson Mandela\'s body liedin state at this building for 3 days (11 Dec - 13 Dec 2013).

UnionBuildings in Pretoria have been added recently to the listof national heritage sites . A 9-metre bronze statue of the late Nelson Mandelawas also unveiled as part of the Day of Reconciliation Celebrations at the UnionBuildings in Pretoria on December 16, 2013.
