The Story-One of the Austrian Mint’sFlagship series is the multiple award winning Niobium range. First issued in2003, with a single coin released annually ever since, the 2015 coin is the 13thto debut and has Cosmology as its subject. All of the coins in this seriesfeature an aspect of science or industry in which Austria has made a significantcontribution, and there is no preset end to the release schedule.
Niobium is a metaldiscovered barely two centuries ago and has become increasingly popular in thejewelry trade because it can be rolled and forged at room temperature. Anotherof niobium’s properties is that color does not need to be applied to it.Instead, through anodized oxidation, the method first applied to coins by theAustrian Mint, a thin oxide layer is produced on the coin surface andsubsequent light refraction enables different colors to arise. The resultanteffect is quite striking and quite unique.
The Austrian Mint has releasedthis year’s niobium and silver coin, which carries a theme of cosmology.Following the format of last year’s issue, the niobium core features twodifferent shades of color.
